Happy Mother’s Day from Chesterbrook Academy! This month we have lots of celebrations going on. First we kick off May with Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2nd to 6th) then we celebrate our moms during our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast on Friday, May 6th (see school spotlight section for more information). We will also be celebrating all our students’ learning and development with our Portfolio Night on Wednesday, June 1st and our preschool graduation on Tuesday, May 31st. We hope you can join us as we spend the month celebrating at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool.
Back by popular demand we are hosting our Family Picnic again this year so mark your calendars for Friday, July 29th! We are very excited to host this event with our sister Naperville schools for past, present, and future families (see the school spotlight section for more information).

Happy Mother’s Day! Please join us on Friday, May 6th for a continental breakfast to honor all our moms. Breakfast will be served buffet style in the hallway; parents are welcome to take food into the classrooms to eat with your child(ren). Enjoy a yummy breakfast with your loved ones!
Preschool Graduation
Please join us on Tuesday, May 31st as we celebrate all our pre-kindergarten student’s accomplishments with our annual preschool graduation. Students will perform on stage and refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
Portfolio Night
On Wednesday, June 1st we are hosting our “Portfolio Night” curriculum Night. Families get to view their child’ completed portfolio and take it home with them. This event is from 5:30pm to 6:30pm; siblings are welcome to attend too!

Getting Ready for Summer Time at Chesterbrook Academy
Sunscreen: The sun is shining bright and our preschoolers are spending more time outside. Please help us in protecting our students by filling out our sunscreen form and returning it with a bottle of sunscreen for your child. A hat is also suggested, please make sure to label with your child’s name. Sunscreen will be applied both AM and PM, fifteen minutes before going outside.
Protective Shoes: Please make sure your child has appropriate footwear for summer. Sandals with backs or clasps and sneakers/gym shoes are great. Please no flip flops at school!
Sprinkler Days: During our summer camp, we will have days where your child needs to wear their swimsuit to school. Please check the summer camp calendar and have your child wear their swimsuit under their clothes on their assigned sprinkler day. Sunscreen will be applied by teachers- please remember to bring underwear & a towel so your child can dry off and change.
Infant, Toddlers, and Beginners who wear diapers, you need to bring in Little Swimmers, so that they can participate in water fun also! All students who wear diapers need to be brought to school wearing regular diapers and the teachers will change students right before going outside to play in the sprinklers.

Please take a moment to review how traffic should flow in our parking lot: Traffic is to enter the parking lot on the Chesterbrook Academy Elementary School side and then follow all the way around the lot and park on the preschool side. Traffic should exit the parking lot on our preschool side. Please make sure to slow down near the cross walk so that you are able to watch for pedestrians crossing from one building to the next and to avoid any accidents or injuries. Heavy traffic times are from 8:30am to 8:45am and 3:35pm to 3:55pm; to avoid these heavy traffic times please arrive to the campus either before or after these arrival and dismissal times.

If you refer a family to any Chesterbrook Academy school, you will receive a free week of tuition off of your oldest child’s tuition. There is no limit to the number of families you refer. Note: The referred family must be full-time student and enrolled for 90 days before the free week of tuition can be applied. If the referral is for a part time student you will receive one hundred dollars off your child’s tuition.

Building Your Child’s Sense of Family Belonging
Relationships with family members play an important role as children begin to develop a sense of self. When they feel a sense of identity and belonging within their own families, children are better able to grow emotionally, make friends, and appreciate and accept the diversity of others.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, it’s a great time to share activities that celebrate the importance of family.
Below are age appropriate activities that we implement in the classroom, as well as activities you can do with your child at home.
INFANTS/TODDLERS:
In the classroom: Teachers use baby sign language to help children identify and eventually verbalize names for their family members. When parents enter the classroom, teachers say, “Look! Here’s Sophia’s mommy,” while also signing “mommy.” They work with parents to learn specific names used at home, and then use those names in the classroom.
At home: Use baby sign language as you come across names of family members in books and songs. To sign “mommy,” tap your thumb on your chin repeatedly. To sign “daddy,” tap your thumb on your forehead repeatedly. Remember to say the word aloud as you sign.
Recommended reading: Spot Loves His Mommy by Eric Hill, Are You my Mother? by PD Eastman
BEGINNERS (ages 2-3):
In the classroom: By age two, children begin to learn the names of extended family members, such as grandmother, uncle and cousin. They practice using these words as they talk about their families. After sorting stuffed animals by type, teachers might say, “This is the horse’s family. He has a big family. Who’s in your family?”
At home: Give your child play dough and encourage him to create the members of his family. Afterward, ask him to count and name them. This activity helps him conceptualize that multiple people make up his entire family and gives you insight into what family means to your child at his particular point in development.

INTERMEDIATES (ages 3-4):
In the classroom: As children read stories about diverse families, teachers encourage them to share unique details about their own families. For example, teachers might ask, “Who has a sister?” or “Who has a pet?” Afterward, students create charts with the information.
At home: Have each member of your family make a thumbprint using finger paint on a piece of paper side by side. Then, ask your child to compare the various sizes, and guess which thumbprint belongs to each person. As they talk about their family members, they begin to appreciate what makes their family unique.

PRE-K/PRE-K 2 (ages 4-5):
In the classroom: Our older preschoolers begin to understand that their parents have more than one role. Family members are invited to visit and talk to the class about their roles inside and outside of the home. Students are encouraged to write and draw their family members in the different roles they serve. For example, “Mommy is a doctor.”
At home: Go on an uninterrupted family outing with your child. Try to avoid checking work emails or answering unimportant phone calls. Afterward, ask your child to write about his favorite parts of the day in his journal.
